Known for their fur-like feathers and five toes, silkies are a great choice for a 4H bird, pet, or broody momma (Oh they love to sit!). Silkies I would say are our best pet breed due to how docile and easy going they are, especially for kids due to their small size making them easy to handle.
Silkies are a very old breed of chicken originating from China, they are a small bantam breed weighing around 32 ounces on the hens and 36 ounces on the cockbirds. Silkies should have 5 toes on each foot and mulberry-black skin with turquoise blue earlobes and a walnut comb. Please see the American Standard of Perfection to get more specific definitions of each color variety.

One of our most sought after varieties, the Mille Fleur silkie. This color is actually is it‘s own variety that absolutely exists in different breeds of chickens. Many are familiar in them through D’Uccles but they were developed into a project so we now have them in silkies & satins. A mille fleur bird has a gold (orange) ground color with a black chevron and white spangle giving the beautiful flashy mille fleur pattern. Another side project I have are porcelain which is Mille fleur plus the lavender gene but I’m not ready to offer any… yet.
Do note that some of my Mille fleur pens will have satins, but not all. Please see the Mille Fleur D’Uccle description in the American Standard of Perfection to get a more specific definition of the Mille Fleur color variety.
Blue was our very first color of silkie, my first love! They are known for their deep slatey blue/gray color, although they can absolutely get so dark they can *almost* look black. Blue comes in many shades which makes them a fun variety. Bred to a splash and you get both blue and splash. Bred to a black and you get blue and black. Finally, if you breed to a blue, you will get all three colors! They are a foundational color for many of our loved project colors like blue mottled, mauve, and mauve mottled!
Black is a classic and are a great foundation to any project color or BBS breeding pen. Did you know, if bred to splash, they will give you 100% blue?
Black is this nice crisp black color with a beetle green sheen. They were the backbone in a lot of our now recognized colors like lavender (self-blue), blue, and paint. They absolutely are beneficial to other project colors like chocolate, mottled, chocolate mottled and actually cuckoo!
Another one of my original varieties, splash is a beautiful variety. They are to be sooty off white with darker slatey splotches of color. A well-done splash is a sight to behold. Bred to a black you get 100% blue and you get 100% splash if bred to splash! They are great to work with in BBS pens, I mean what's there not to love? you get something a little different depending on who's momma!
Gray is such an underrated color. When I decided to switch over to just silkie in my gray/laced pen, I actually had a decently hard time finding people with them. Grays according to the SOP are to have a chinchilla gray, with a light gray breast on both sexes.
The males are to have a dark head, while the females have a chinchilla gray head. The hackles on both sexes should be light gray streaked with darker gray.
Another one of my highly sought after silkie colors, buff are to be a golden-y pumpkin color. Absolutely gorgeous color. I just love the bright colors like buff and mille fleur. Buff is one of the colors I have also put a significant amount of work towards in 2025 and will be continuing to do so into 2026. Anyone wanting a silkie rainbow should get a buff!
